The YWIES Lingang campus came alive on 17th June with the laughter and excitement of returning alumni. From all corners of the world, 30 alumni gathered this summer to reconnect at the campus they once called home. The reunion kicked off with a delightful lunch gathering at the school canteen, followed by an engaging alumni panel discussion where current students eagerly participated. The day reached its climax with a spirited basketball game between alumni and current students, creating a perfect blend of learning and fun.

In her opening speech, Chinese Co-principal Ms. Linda Lee expressed her immense pride in witnessing the growth of the very first four graduating classes. She encouraged current students to seize this invaluable opportunity to seek advice, exchange ideas, and learn from their alumni counterparts.

Western Co-principal Mr. Clayton Mullins extended a warm welcome to the alumni, congratulating them on their personal journeys. He emphasized the importance of maintaining lifelong relationships with the alma mater, as the shared experiences and wisdom of alumni can profoundly impact current students' lives, just as it did on this special day.

The keynote speaker, Mr. John Liu, the Head of Careers and University Guidance and Student Development, captivated the audience with powerful storytelling. Using the ancient technique of Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramics, as a metaphor for life, Mr. Liu illuminated the beauty of embracing the uncharted and finding joy in life's unexpected journeys. He shared his own personal odyssey, navigating love, health, and self-discovery, inspiring the audience to embrace the unexpected and even painful experiences that shape their strength and character.

The panel discussion, skillfully hosted by Ms. Jennifer Liu, the Career and University Guidance Coordinator, was a highlight of the day. Six alumni representatives, one from each graduating class, shared their cherished memories of YWIES, offered valuable advice on college applications, and provided insights on adjusting to overseas life and studies.

Let's take a glimpse into the wisdom shared by the panelists:

    Sara Li

    Class of 2022

    McGill University

    Secondary Science&Technology

I found my passion in education because of the dedicated teachers I met at YWIES. While education constantly evolves, there are timeless values in traditional pedagogy, which greatly influenced my Secondary Science & Technology programme. I encourage current students to discover their passion and pursue it wholeheartedly.

I am deeply grateful for teachers' invaluable professional guidance, which has significantly contributed to my artistic pursuits. Living abroad requires cultivating independence, especially for students planning to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. I recommend making accommodation arrangements early and considering the pros and cons of on-campus and off-campus housing options, including factors like the surrounding environment and overall safety.

When applying to universities, thorough research is crucial. Consider academic requirements, tuition fees, and discuss with your parents. After completing A Level exams, prepare the necessary health checks and required documents. As school open days approach, you may experience anxiety and a sense of loss, but embrace these emotions as catalysts for positive growth.

    Class of 2021

    University of Southern California

    Business Administration

For students applying to U.S. universities, transfer opportunities exist if you didn't receive the desired offer in high school or aspire to reach the next level. Prioritize your studies, aim for a GPA of 3.7 or higher, and actively engage in extracurricular activities and community volunteering. These experiences will greatly enhance your transfer application.

    Kris Pan

    Class of 2022

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    Psychology

I miss the strong sense of community and familial atmosphere at Yew Wah. I have managed to maintain contact with our teachers, especially the Psychology teacher. Cherish this period of mentorship and friendship, as you will undoubtedly miss these connections once you are abroad.

    Nino Dou

    Class of 2020

    University College London

MSc Drug Discovery and Pharma Management

Studying abroad often brings moments of loneliness, self-doubt, and self-reflection. The transition can be challenging, especially when separated from friends and family, embarking on a new chapter alone. During these times, prioritize your well-being by engaging in activities like exercise, spending time in nature, and reading. Remember, this journey plays a vital role in shaping your character.

The panel discussion concluded with Nino's thought-provoking statement, "The world is not black or white, but a delicate shade of grey." This inspiring message served as a powerful reminder for students to embrace diverse perspectives and explore life from various angles, promoting a deeper understanding of the world around them.

The event was skillfully hosted by Ms. Vara Yang, the Career and University Guidance Counsellor, and Alexander, an A2 student, who ensured a seamless and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

To wrap up the alumni reunion day on a high note, an exhilarating and friendly basketball game was organized between alumni and current students at the newly open gym.

The alumni reunion was not just a nostalgic journey into the past but a beacon of inspiration for current students. It served as a reminder that the YWIES community is not bound by time or distance, but by a shared bond that transcends borders. The event left everyone with a renewed sense of pride and gratitude for their alma mater, eagerly looking forward to the future and the opportunities it holds.
