During this year's Spring Festival, Deepseek emerged as a viral sensation across the internet, highlighting how AI has become an integral part of our daily lives.

Mr O’D, a teacher at YWIES Shanghai Lingang and a seasoned educator with extensive experience in STEM education, has been closely observing how students interact with AI.

Reflecting on these interactions, he shared an intriguing thought:

"Why does there still seem to be such a disconnect between students and the rapidly evolving world of AI technology? 

AI has become incredibly pervasive, and students are no strangers to using it for tasks like researching homework or asking simple questions. "

But he wondered:

"Do they truly feel that AI is an integral part of their lives? 

Do they see it as more than just a tool, but as a companion or a guide? "

This question not only reflects the current role of AI technology in education but also highlights the need to guide students in understanding, embracing, and leveraging AI effectively in the future.

With these reflections, an idea began to take root in Mr O’D's mind:

"To bridge the gap between students and AI by creating a project that would allow them to not only understand AI but also build a meaningful connection with it.  "

With the invaluable support of a leading STEM technician from Huangzhou, they developed the DeepSpeak Project.

What is DeepSpeak?  

DeepSpeak is an innovative initiative that empowers students to harness the latest DeepSeek AI model in a way that directly benefits them—by creating their very own DeepSpeak AI English Tutor

Here’s how it works: 

✦Learning About AI：

Students first gain a foundational understanding of AI in the classroom. They explore what AI is, how it works, and the technology behind it.

✦Hands-On Creation：

Equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge, students then build their own AI-powered chip.  

✦Interactive Learning：

Once the chip is ready, students can engage in real-time conversations with it. The AI tutor responds with human-like tones and inflections, mimicking a real-life English teacher.  

Since last week, our students, fueled by a passion for knowledge and cutting-edge technology, have enthusiastically engaged in learning and hands-on practice. Already, some students have successfully created their own AI English tutors and are actively using them in their daily studies.

From mastering theoretical concepts to building the system themselves and interacting with their AI tutors, this entire journey has not only strengthened their ability to apply theoretical knowledge, develop practical skills, and solve problems but has also nurtured their innovative thinking, logical reasoning, and cross-cultural communication abilities.
